Machinery - Spot Welder

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

Spot welding is a process in which contacting metal surfaces are joined by the heat obtained from resistance to electric current flow. Work-pieces are held together under pressure exerted by electrodes.

Typically the sheets are in the 0.5 to 3 mm thickness range. The process uses two shaped copper alloy electrodes to concentrate welding current into a small “spot” and to simultaneously clamp the sheets together.

Forcing a large current through the spot will melt the metal and form the weld. The attractive feature of spot welding is a lot of energy can be delivered to the spot in a very short time (approximately ten milliseconds).

That permits the welding to occur without excessive heating to the rest of the sheet.

What the volcanic ash is doing to aeroplanes

Monday, May 16th, 2011

Again its happened, the Icelandic volcano has erupted and caused another ash cloud, and airlines are getting quite freaked out by it. Not as much as last time though!

“They are made of sharp rock fragments that will easily erode plastic, metal and even glass pieces.”

“Volcanic ash contains particles, whose melting point is below engine internal temperature.

“In-flight, these particles will immediately melt if they go through an engine. Going through a turbine, the materials are rapidly cooled down, stick on the turbine vanes, and disturb the flow of high pressure combustion gases.”

“Ash deposits easily absorbs into water and can cause arcing, short circuits and intermittent failure of electronic components.”

As a knock on affect of this the manual outlined how, “Dense ash deposit can clog bleed system filters and may lead to total bleed loss, with associated loss of cabin pressurisation.”

Molybdenum plays vital role in mining.

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Molybdenum is an indispensable ingredient in the steels used in mining equipment. It adds strength and wear resistance to the machines used to dig and process ore. It brings corrosion resistance to the chemical processes used in many mining operations. It even finds its way into the lubricants that keep the machines from breaking down. Here we focus on molybdenum in the machinery that digs, shovels, hauls, crushes, grinds and mills the rock to extract valuable raw materials.

Nearly everything we use in our daily lives was once a resource in the ground, often present in miniscule percentages. However, Mother Earth does not give up her treasures easily! Someone has to find that resource, extract it from its home in the earth and enrich it in order to create a useful raw material for material suppliers. To do this, miners dig, crush, grind and mill enormous quantities of rock, stones and dirt and transport them from place to place in the process. The quantities of material and its hardness place great stresses on the equipment used. All along the chain of converting dirt to useful raw materials,

Moly plays an important role. It adds service life to the equipment used throughout the mine and plant, lowering the cost of production and bringing into everyday reach materials and products that we consider indispensable.
